great site

This website has every single poem of Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal in french, with about five english translations for each. They’ve got audio recordings of the poems as well, though I’m not sure if they’re french or english as I haven’t listened to them yet to assess the quality.

I love sites like this and wish there were more of them — they make me all passionate about poetry for the people.

  1. For an English teacher, I’m really not that in to poetry. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it, but I do find that I feel a lot of it is overdone for my liking. I took Spanish in high school (some 20 years ago), so poems in French wouldn’t work for me. At this point, poems in Spanish wouldn’t, either and, sometimes, poems in English leave me confounded…

  2. Well, that is interesting but perhaps a little challenging. At the risk of sounding fawning, may I say that I enjoy your blog very much – all sorts of interesting things.

  3. Mrs C: Do you find Baudelaire overdone? I do, sort of, but he also falls within a historical movement that allows it — like the Romantics. God knows that Shelley is hysterically overdone at times, but it’s such a genuine outpouring of emotion that it’s okay somehow. 21st Century overdone I cannot stand. In general I am not at all a fan of contemporary poetry…

Anne: Thank you so much for your kind words! I’ve been a longtime lurky reader of your blog, so I really especially appreciate them.
